Vikunja vs Trello

Kanban boards that aren't owned by Atlassian.

Trello popularized Kanban boards for everyone. Then Atlassian bought it, and now you pay $10/user/month to unlock the calendar view.

On the free plan, you get 10 boards and 250 automation runs per month. Want more views? Premium. Custom fields? Standard plan. Export to CSV? Premium. The free tier is a demo with guardrails.

Vikunja has Kanban boards. It also has list, Gantt, and table views of the same data. All of them work on every plan, including the free self-hosted one. No Power-Ups required.

And because it's open-source, you can run it on your own server. Your project boards don't live on Atlassian's US infrastructure. You can put them wherever you want.

What Trello makes you pay for

These are free in Vikunja. All of them.

Multiple views. Trello's calendar, timeline, table, and dashboard views are locked behind Premium ($10/user/month). In Vikunja, you switch between list, Kanban, Gantt, and table whenever you want.

CSV export. Trello only lets Premium users export to CSV. On the free plan, your only option is a JSON dump. Vikunja lets you export your data on any plan, because it's your data.

Unlimited boards. Trello's free plan caps you at 10 boards per workspace. Vikunja has no limits on projects.

EU data residency. Trello doesn't support Atlassian's data residency feature. Your data is in the US, period. With Vikunja, self-host wherever you want, or use our Cloud on EU infrastructure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I import my Trello boards?

Yes. Export your board as JSON from Trello, then import it in Vikunja. Your cards, lists, and labels come over automatically.

Does Vikunja have automations like Trello's Butler?

Vikunja supports webhooks that let you trigger external automations. It doesn't have a visual automation builder like Butler, but the webhook approach is more flexible if you're comfortable with tools like n8n or Zapier.

Can I use Vikunja for free?

Self-host it for free with no limits on boards, tasks, or users. If you want managed hosting, Vikunja Cloud starts at 4 EUR/month with a 14-day free trial.
